BTEC Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Construction with Refrigeration, Heating & Air Conditioning

Who is it for?

With its emphasis on RHVAC systems, this course would suit anyone already in the construction industry who would like to venture into this specialised field, or formalise the experience they've already gained working in this area. Of course, previous experience is not mandatory, and anyone with an interest in entering the construction industry may apply.

Where can it lead?

With over 2 million people employed in more than 700 different roles, there will always be a demand for qualified tradespeople in construction. As well as housing and business needs, special events such as the London Olympic Games will ensure an ongoing source of building projects. While this qualification is primarily designed for entry into the RHVAC field, the construction overview it offers can also lead to a role in another trade, from architectural technician, bricklayer or construction manager to quarry worker, stonemason or window fitter.

Salary?

Salaries are modest at entry level in the construction industry, but can rise as you gain experience. A well qualified and experienced RHVAC technician can expect to earn an average of around £27,000.

Can I apply?

For this course, you need to be over 16 years of age and educated to a minimum of GCSE standard D-G, or hold an NVQ at level 1 or a GNVQ Foundation Certificate.

What will I study?  

Health, Safety and Welfare

• Examine the employer’s and employee’s responsibilities for health, safety and welfare in the workplace.
• Learn how to reduce risks in the workplace.

Construction Technology and Design

• Explore the various stages of the design and planning processes, and examine factors that can affect these processes.
• Study both traditional and modern methods of construction.
• Investigate how water, drainage, gas and electricity are provided to buildings.

Heating

• Explore clients’ differing requirements, and learn how to identify locations with special heating requirements.
• Examine local and central systems.
• Study comfort indices, internal and external design temperatures, infiltration rates and the effects of building exposure.
• Consider the relevant regulations, codes of practice and standards.

Ventilation and Air Conditioning

• Learn how to design air conveyance systems and single-zone air conditioning systems.
• Explore commissioning, operational and maintenance requirements.

Refrigeration Technology

• Explore the design principles for the selection and balancing of equipment.
• Learn how to install refrigeration and air conditioning plants.
• Examine the codes of practice and relevant legislation.
  

Assessment

You will complete five formative assessments, and five compulsory assessments. These can be completed online (the fastest option) or posted to ICS. Scenario-based assignments test that you can apply the knowledge you have learnt from the course to imaginary scenarios. Each assignment requires you to complete a number of questions or activities.
