Who is it for?
As the appointment of teaching assistants is at the discretion of schools or local authorities, you may already be working in this capacity without formal qualifications. This course allows you to take that experience and convert it into a recognised award which can lead to further study and more responsible roles. The course is also useful for anyone with an interest in children and education wanting to take on a teaching or classroom assistant role.
Where can it lead?
Teaching assistants can take on more and more responsibility as they gain experience. Further assessment can see you progress to a Higher Level Teaching Assistant role, where you'll expand your duties to include lesson preparation and presentation, in conjunction with the class teacher, and specialist help. Should you wish to go on to become a qualified teacher, your experience and learning will give you a head start in your studies.
Salary?
Generally, a teaching assistant can expect a salary of between £12,000 and £17,000. Higher Level assistants can earn between £16,000 and £21,000, although the figure is highly dependent on any specialisations and experience.
Can I apply?
For this course, you need to be over 16 years of age and educated to a minimum of GCSE standard D-G, or hold an NVQ at level 1 or a GNVQ Foundation Certificate. However, it is important to note that teaching assistants generally need to be aged 18 or over.
