CIPD Employee Relations (Generalist Elective)

Intended to take your expertise in HR management to the next level, this elective course comprises one of  the four modules of the CIPD Professional Development Scheme (PDS). You'll learn effective employee relations skills, where you'll work with staff to help them in managing change and setting personal and professional goals. You'll also develop your abilities in dealing with grievances and disciplinary situations, and learn to create a culture of commitment and co-operation within an organisation. This advanced qualification is intended to prepare you for eventual entry into senior management, and as such will equip you with advanced management and development skills that can be applied to all areas of business.

 

What will I study?

Employee Relations Management in Context (1)

  • Considering the history and development of employee relations. Examine the changing environment in terms of social, political and economic factors. Explore the impact of the European Union on employee relations.

Employee Relations Management in Context (2)

  • Examine the role of the government as an economic manager and legislator. Review relevant policies and frameworks and their implications. Explore State agencies, such as the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service.

The Parties in Employee Relations

  • Examine employers’ associations, the nature of management, and employee relations’ business strategies. Consider the role of trade unions and other forms of employee representation. Examine the State as an employer.

Employee Involvement and Participation

  • Examine communication strategies and policies to enhance employee involvement and participation.

Employee Relations Outcomes

  • Consider the reasons for and types of industrial action. Examine the different types of agreements that can be reached, and the impact of trade unions on organisational efficiency.

Employee Relations Skills (1)

  • Examine the groups involved in negotiation, the different types of negotiation, and negotiating situations. Consider the bargaining process and the psychological contract. Review collective bargaining and consider the role of health, safety and environment committees.

Employee Relations Skills (2)

  • Examine the following topics in depth: grievance, discipline, redundancy, managing change.
