City & Guilds IEE Wiring Regulations

As an electrician, you need to be able to demonstrate your knowledge of current industry standards and regulations. The Institute of Electrical Engineers’ (IEE) Wiring Regulations (17th Edition), also known as BS7671:2008, are the latest definitive electrical industry standards for the safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems, and as such are vital to your ongoing professional role. This course will give you the training you need to prepare for the  City & Guilds’ 2382 exam, and covers all aspects of BS7671.

  • Familiarise yourself with the definitions and symbols used in BS7671. Examine the different earthing systems.

Assessment of the General Characteristics of the Installation

  • Explore the importance of making an assessment of the general characteristics of an installation, and consider an installation’s purpose, compatibility with other installations, and maintainability. Learn to identify external influences to which the installation may be subjected.

Requirements for Overcurrent Protection, Cable Sizing and Voltage Drop

  • Explore the Regulations’ requirements for overcurrent protection and the basic method of cable sizing. Examine the requirements for limiting the voltage drop within an installation.

Requirements for Isolation and Switching

  • Explore the Regulations’ requirements for isolation and switching facilities. Discover ways of meeting these requirements, including the use of suitable devices.

Earthing, Bonding and Shock Protection

  • Explore the Regulations’ requirements for protection against electric shock and the methods available for meeting these requirements. Examine the Regulations’ earthing and bonding requirements.

Selection and Erection of Equipment

  • Examine the selection and erection of wiring systems and other systems, and explore operational requirements, external influences and accessibility.

Requirements for Inspection and Testing

  • Learn how to adhere to the requirements of BS7671 as regards the inspection and testing of an installation.

Special Installations or Locations

  • Explore ways in which the General Regulations may need to be modified to suit particular situations, for example: bathrooms, swimming pools, saunas, construction sites, agricultural and horticultural premises, restrictive locations, caravans and highways.
