CIPD People Management & Development

Intended to take your expertise in HR management to the next level, this course comprises one of the four modules of the CIPD Professional Development Scheme (PDS). You'll build on your existing experience in the demanding world of HR management, and work on balancing staff, encouraging development and recognising training opportunities, and managing staff relations and reward. This advanced qualification is intended to prepare you for eventual entry into senior management, and as such will equip you with advanced management and development skills that can be applied to all areas of business.

 

What will I study?

Shaping the People Management and Development Agenda

  • Examine the changing world of work and employment. Consider legal, political, economic and institutional frameworks for people management and development.

The Contribution of People Management and Development Expertise

  • Examine the growth of personnel and development as a specialist function. Study change management, ethics and professionalism.

Integrating the People Management and Development Contribution (1)

  • Consider the link between HR and business strategy. Examine the concepts of ‘vertical integration’ and ‘horizontal integration’. Study how the use of high performance work practices can improve the knowledge, skills, abilities and motivation of a firm’s current and potential employees.

Integrating the People Management and Development Contribution (2)

  • Examine other integral personnel and development factors, including the role of the line manager; the use of consultants in people management and development; and the need to market, develop and measure the personnel and development contribution.

Recruitment and Retention

  • Examine the issues of recruitment and selection, taking into account the strategic context in which an organisation operates.

Learning and Development

  • Examine the importance of both organisational and individual learning. Consider how organisations can create a performance culture by making learning integral to the workplace. Study the concept of knowledge management. Explore the psychological contract.

Employee Relations

  • Examine employee relations from both a union and non-union perspective. Consider the implications of more diverse ways of working. Study the ways in which conflicts between employer and employees may be handled through disciplinary and grievance procedures, and consider the increasingly important role of line managers in conflict resolution.

Reward Management

  • Consider a number of different aspects of reward management, from the more straightforward and traditional methods, such as time-based schemes, to the more complex areas, such as payment by results or job evaluation.
