Plumbing

As almost every construction project - commercial or domestic, big or small - entails some elements of plumbing, plumbers are in demand. A career in this trade can prove highly rewarding and lucrative. This course is designed to give you the skills you need to begin working as a plumber, or formalise your existing experience and skills. It can also lead to further study to gain the City and Guilds Level 2 NVQ in Mechanical Engineering Services Plumbing (Domestic). You'll learn all about the trade, and explore hot and cold water and heating systems. You'll examine fittings and tools, and learn the health and safety considerations that are essential to the safe completion of any plumbing project.

 

What will I study?

Introduction to Plumbing

  • Examine the plumbing industry. Learn how to ensure the safety of yourself and others while at work, and how to act in the case of an emergency.

Plumbing Processes and Principles

  • Learn how to use hand tools and power tools, and how to measure, cut, bend, joint and fix a range of pipework materials. Study the maths and science of plumbing.

Cold and Hot Water Systems and Components

  • Learn how to supply cold and hot water and how to store hot water. Explore instantaneous hot water systems and unvented systems. Learn how to maintain and service the components of both cold and hot water systems.

Sanitation Systems

  • Learn how to install and test sanitation systems. Explore the maintenance and decommissioning of sanitation systems.

Central Heating Systems

  • Explore the different types of central heating systems and their components. Examine the commissioning, maintenance and decommissioning of central heating systems.

Electricity

  • Examine the principles of electricity and explore electricity supply. Learn the installation requirements for electrical systems and explore their testing and decommissioning.

Sheet Lead Weatherings

  • Explore sheet lead design considerations and learn how to work with sheet lead. Examine the domestic applications of sheet lead work.

Environmental Awareness

  • Examine ways in which plumbers can help the environment, for example, by improving energy efficiency and safely disposing of waste materials.

Effective Working Relationships

  • Examine the construction industry and learn how to build effective working relationships with the various members of the construction team.
